Most San Diego County offices follow the same general pattern: open at 8:00 a.m. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and at 9:00 a.m. Tuesday and Thursday (the late opening lets staff handle morning training and queue prep). Closing is generally 5:00 p.m.

Appointment vs. walk-in

You can book most DMV transactions by appointment through the official DMV website. Appointments are strongly recommended — walk-in waits at busy offices like Hillcrest and Chula Vista routinely exceed two hours, especially mid-morning and the first/last week of the month. Appointment slots typically book out one to three weeks in advance.

Some transactions cannot be done at the field office at all and must be done online or by mail (simple registration renewals, address changes, duplicate registration cards).

Driver license vs. vehicle registration

Not every DMV office handles every transaction. Most full-service field offices listed above handle both driver license services (original, renewal, REAL ID, written/behind-the-wheel tests) and vehicle registration services (title transfers, registration renewals, VIN verifications, salvage and revived-salvage processing).

A handful of smaller satellite offices in the county handle vehicle registration only. If you're going specifically for a license issue, confirm the office you're visiting offers driver license services before you make the trip.

Bring the right documents

For any title transfer or registration transaction, bring the original signed title (or a completed REG 227 if lost), a smog certificate if required, a current ID, and payment for fees and use tax. For driver license transactions, bring the documents listed in the DMV's REAL ID checklist if you're upgrading. Showing up with incomplete paperwork is the single most common reason appointments get re-booked weeks later.
